Quick answer: ship Ro-Ro for 1–2 vehicles — it is cheaper per unit ($1,200–$2,800 by route) and simpler. Ship a 40HQ container for 3–6 vehicles — the per-unit cost drops ($600–$1,600 per car), cars are sealed and protected, and you can mix body types in one box. If your destination has no Ro-Ro service, or you are shipping to Russia/Central Asia, container (or rail/truck) is the only sensible choice.
These are the two workhorse methods for moving used cars out of China. Both sail from Tianjin or Shanghai. The right answer depends on how many units you are moving, how valuable they are, and which port they need to reach.
Side-by-side comparison
| Ro-Ro (roll-on / roll-off) | 40HQ container | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | 1–2 vehicles, standard models | 3–6 vehicles, mixed models, higher-value cars |
| Per-unit cost (2026 typical) | $1,200–$2,800 by route | $600–$1,600 per car (box total $3,500–$7,500) |
| Protection in transit | Open deck parking; exposed to salt spray and handling | Wrapped, blocked and braced; sealed box, seal number tracked |
| Loading documentation | Vessel manifest | Photos + seal number shared with buyer before sailing |
| Mixed cargo / body types | One vehicle class per booking works best | Sedans + SUVs + pickups in one box (3 for large SUVs, up to 6 for sedans) |
| Port coverage | Major Ro-Ro terminals only (Jebel Ali, Lagos, Mombasa…) | Any container port |
| Insurance claims risk | Higher — cosmetic damage more common | Lower — damage is rare and provable |
When Ro-Ro wins
- You are importing one car for personal use and want the lowest all-in price.
- Your destination is a major Ro-Ro terminal with frequent sailings.
- You are comfortable with cosmetic-transit risk on a standard, easily-repaired model.
When the container wins
- You are ordering 3+ vehicles — the per-unit saving is immediate.
- You ship premium or near-new vehicles where paint and trim condition is part of the value.
- Your buyers are inland — containers move onto rail or trucks for the final leg.
- You want a documented seal chain: we record loading on video, note the seal number, and you verify it on arrival before opening.
Two alternatives that are neither
For Russia and Kazakhstan, don't price sea freight at all: the China-Europe Railway Express and overland trucking via Khorgos deliver in 12–20 days — roughly half the sea transit — at competitive per-box rates. For right-hand-drive markets in Southeast Asia, short-sea container services from Chinese ports are the standard route.
Decision checklist
- Count your units. 1–2 → Ro-Ro. 3+ → 40HQ container.
- Check whether your destination port has Ro-Ro service at all. If not → container.
- Destination in CIS/Central Asia → rail or truck via Khorgos.
- Premium or showroom-condition stock → container, even for 1–2 cars.
- Still unsure? Ask us to quote the same shipment both ways — the numbers usually decide for you.
Frequently asked questions
Does a container cost more in destination handling?
Slightly — there are container unpacking and return charges that Ro-Ro avoids. But for 3+ vehicles the per-unit freight saving is far larger than the extra handling cost.
Can I track my Ro-Ro or container shipment?
Yes. You track by bill of lading number with the carrier, and by container seal number for container loads. We also send a loading video and document set before the vessel departs.
What about damage insurance?
Marine insurance (0.2–0.5% of value) is standard and included in CIF quotes. Claims are easier to prove with container shipments because the seal chain documents who opened the box, and when.
