Mileage vs Age: What Matters More on a Used Car from China?

Two cars sit in the yard: a three-year-old with 140,000 km and a seven-year-old with 60,000 km. Buyers almost always reach for the second one. Often they should not — and here is the arithmetic that settles it.

The short answer

For most of a car, kilometres predict remaining life better than years do. Age attacks a specific, limited set of materials — rubber, seals, fluids, plastics, paint and, on electrics, battery chemistry. Everything that actually moves and carries load wears with distance. The exception matters: a car that has barely moved also has problems, just different ones.

The right question is therefore not "mileage or age" but "how many kilometres per year, and were they serviced?" That single ratio reframes both of the cars in the yard.

Why the usual rule bends in China

Three features of the Chinese market make gut instinct unreliable:

  • Dense urban use. Private cars in Chinese cities commonly cover 10,000–20,000 km a year, much of it stop-start. 60,000 city kilometres is not the same wear as 60,000 highway kilometres.
  • Fleet retirement on a schedule. Leasing and ride-hailing fleets cycle vehicles out on fixed schedules regardless of condition, so a three-year-old car can carry 200,000+ km — with immaculate, fully documented dealer servicing.
  • Genuine low-mileage cars exist. Many urban households own a second car used only at weekends. Those cars can be genuinely low-kilometre, and they are desirable — but long parking spells bring brittle rubber, flat-spotted tyres and degraded fluids.

What age actually breaks

Time degrades things that do not care whether the car moves:

  • Rubber: tyres (check the DOT code — age, not tread, is often the limit), belts, hoses, engine and suspension mounts, door and window seals.
  • Fluids: brake fluid absorbs moisture, coolant loses corrosion inhibitors, engine oil degrades in place.
  • Plastics and trim: interior plastics, headlight lenses, wiring insulation.
  • Paint and corrosion protection: UV and weather, plus underbody protection that dries and cracks.
  • Batteries: the 12 V battery, and — critically — the traction battery of an EV or hybrid, which loses capacity through calendar ageing as well as use.

What mileage actually breaks

Distance wears things that only move when the car does:

  • Engine: piston rings, bearings, timing chain and turbocharger.
  • Transmission: clutch packs, torque converter, valve body, gearSets.
  • Chassis: dampers, ball joints, bushings, wheel bearings, steering rack.
  • Brakes: discs and pads — and their condition is one of the most honest mileage cross-checks you have.
  • Interior: seat bolsters, steering wheel rim, pedal rubbers, driver's floor mat.

The four-number check

Instead of asking which single figure is better, collect four and read them together:

  1. Odometer. The headline number, and the least trustworthy on its own.
  2. Build date. From the door-jamb plate — not the registration date, which can lag by a year or more.
  3. Annualised mileage. Odometer ÷ age. Below roughly 8,000 km/yr suggests a parked car; above roughly 30,000 km/yr suggests fleet or commercial use. Neither is disqualifying — but each points you at a specific inspection emphasis.
  4. Service interval adherence. A 140,000 km car serviced on schedule at an authorised dealer is a better buy than a 60,000 km car with gaps.

A word in defence of ex-fleet cars

Fleet-retired stock is the backbone of Chinese used exports, and it is often the best-documented stock available. Leasing and ride-hailing operators service on schedule at authorised dealers because downtime costs them money, and they keep complete records. Roughly a third of the stock we source comes from leasing and ride-hailing fleet retirements, and these vehicles consistently pass inspection with clean structures.

The honest trade-off: high kilometres mean more consumable wear now, but predictable maintenance history and no accident repairs. For a buyer who will service the car properly at the destination, that is usually the better bet.

Thresholds by destination

  • Africa (Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana): price-led markets accept high kilometres on Japanese petrol models, provided the parts ecosystem exists locally. Structural condition and brand familiarity outrank the odometer.
  • GCC (UAE, Saudi Arabia): buyers weight age and specification more heavily, and strong air-conditioning and cooling-system condition matter in extreme heat.
  • Russia and Central Asia: cold-start reliability, heating, corrosion protection and underbody condition carry more weight than headline kilometres.
  • Southeast Asia: age limits and engine-displacement tax bands often decide the shortlist before condition does — check the destination's age rule first.
  • Latin America: Japanese-brand aftermarket support and displacement-based taxes shape the decision; verify the local tax band before falling in love with an engine size.

Frequently asked questions

Is high mileage worse than old age on a used car from China?

For most components, accumulated kilometres predict remaining life better than calendar years. Age degrades rubber, seals, fluids, plastics and paint regardless of use, and calendar loss also affects EV batteries. The practical test is the combination: annualised mileage plus service history tells you more than either figure alone.

What is a good annual mileage figure for a Chinese used car?

Private Chinese cars typically accumulate 10,000–20,000 km a year. Below roughly 8,000 km a year suggests a second car that may have sat unused, which brings its own problems; above roughly 30,000 km a year usually indicates fleet, ride-hailing or inter-city commercial use.

Are ex-fleet and ex-ride-hailing cars from China a bad buy?

Not necessarily. Fleet-retired vehicles carry high kilometres but usually have complete, on-schedule servicing at authorised dealers and no accident history — which is why they are sought after rather than avoided. The key is documented service history and a clean structural inspection, both of which are checkable.

What mileage should I target for export to Africa?

Price-driven African markets commonly accept 80,000–150,000 km on Japanese petrol models, provided parts and technician coverage exist locally and the car passes structural inspection. What matters more than the number is the brand's parts ecosystem in the destination country.

Does age matter more for electric cars?

Yes. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity through calendar ageing as well as cycling, so a five-year-old EV with low kilometres can still show measurable degradation. On EVs, always request a diagnostic state-of-health reading rather than relying on mileage or the dashboard range estimate.
